Just some thoughts I had while rewatching Arcane, posted under the cut. They are very disorganized and not at all coherent (maybe a little coherent).
We mostly see Vander mentoring Vi during the course of the show—understandable because she's one of the main characters—but we get brief glances into his relationship with his other children. He calls upon Claggor to be a reliable minion and snitch (RIP Claggor). He encourages Mylo when Mylo is freaking out about picking locks. He's prepping Vi to one day take his place as the protector of the Lanes.
His one scene with Powder, though, is at his bar pouring her a drink. And she's not really reacting to him. A friend on Discord pointed out that the lack of reaction is what cued Vander into something being wrong. But this is Arcane where every single storytelling decision comes with multiple layers attached to it. And I wonder if this scene with Powder is also indicative of Vander's relationship with her as a whole.
Some of Vander's encouragements to Vi are to "protect the family" and "watch over [your] sister." And I wonder if that's because Powder doesn't really react to Vander in the same way she reacts to Vi. For Powder, Vi is the final authority, so Vander—with no other options, I might add, he's pulled in a lot of different directions—parents Powder through Vi.
Is this fair to Vi? No. But this is the undercity where children are forced to grow up faster than they are in Piltover. And if Powder resists Vander's attempts to connect with her otherwise, then Vander's going to encourage ways where she does connect with others.
To me, it's a little disturbing that Vi knows how to navigate a brothel when the last time she would have been in one was when she was 16? It's also a little fascinating. Would Vi have ever tried out that line of work?
Babette had such an experienced wisdom about her when she was talking to Vi in episode 5. I want to see more of her.
These thoughts are brought to you by Viktor disarming one of Powder's grenades with practiced ease. I wonder how many he disarmed himself. I wonder if he recognized the drawings. I wonder if he recognized the make. I wonder if this will come up in season 2.
If you put some thought into it, it's because Vi is the threat to Silco's empire. She's the successor to whatever Vander has going on, and she's the one that will uphold Vander's legacy. This is threatened by her hotheadedness and willingness to fight against the oppressors, a hotheadedness that Silco probably wanted to use for his own gain. Turn Vander's legacy on its head and turn Vi into a martyr for Zaun.
I'd love to read that fanfic!
I'd like to know the full story behind that. Was it Silco that started the bridge event? Was it Silco that first proposed violence at a peaceful rally? Or did Silco do something else? Or did Vander do something? What happened that made brothers hate each other so?
Let me know your thoughts on Arcane. I really like this show, and we've gone so far without new material that I'm devolving into writing a bunch of silly AUs with my new pair of fictional lesbians. Second season announcement when?
Vander While Parenting
So one of the things I believe most ardently about this show is that every single character deserves love and flack in equal measure. These are flawed humans doing their best and their best isn't good enough and they know it.We mostly see Vander mentoring Vi during the course of the show—understandable because she's one of the main characters—but we get brief glances into his relationship with his other children. He calls upon Claggor to be a reliable minion and snitch (RIP Claggor). He encourages Mylo when Mylo is freaking out about picking locks. Babette
We get Babette all of two minutes (not even) and I love her. I want to know more about her story. I wonder what sort of relationships she had with Vi.To me, it's a little disturbing that Vi knows how to navigate a brothel when the last time she would have been in one was when she was 16? It's also a little fascinating. Would Vi have ever tried out that line of work?

Viktor and Powder friendship?
These two probably share a science mentor, though that's not explored in the first season. Singed is probably the one that taught Powder how to make her grenades really explode. Singed also had a relationship with Viktor when Viktor was a young boy. Would Viktor and Powder have known each other? These thoughts are brought to you by Viktor disarming one of Powder's grenades with practiced ease. I wonder how many he disarmed himself. I wonder if he recognized the drawings. I wonder if he recognized the make. I wonder if this will come up in season 2.
Silco and Vi
In the first act, there's a subtle thread of Silco hunting down Vi. It's not really explored, but I want it to be. What does Silco want Vi for?If you put some thought into it, it's because Vi is the threat to Silco's empire. She's the successor to whatever Vander has going on, and she's the one that will uphold Vander's legacy. This is threatened by her hotheadedness and willingness to fight against the oppressors, a hotheadedness that Silco probably wanted to use for his own gain. Silco and Vander
In general, we know that Silco and Vander used to be so close they called each other brothers. But something made Vander try to kill Silco. And maybe I'm just not paying much attention, but did that betrayal happen around the time of the bridge at the beginning? Or was it earlier?I'd like to know the full story behind that. Was it Silco that started the bridge event? Was it Silco that first proposed violence at a peaceful rally? Or did Silco do something else? Or did Vander do something? What happened that made brothers hate each other so?
