I love Murderbot. And in celebration of its upcoming new television show, I'm currently rereading the entire series. While I recommend newcomers read the books in sequential order, I'm giving them to you from my least favorite to my most favorite. At the time of this post, The Murderbot Diaries consists of seven books.
As a disclaimer, all of these books are bangers. I love every one, but some I love more than others.
Let's get to it!
For as many interesting emotional things happening in this book, it's always a slog to get through. It's slow-paced and just as empty as the terraforming structure Murderbot is sneaking around. I still love Mikki, though. I would have loved to have seen that relationship play out in a different context.
This one is just chalked up to my dislike of mysteries. I like watching mysteries, but I get tired when I'm reading them. This is otherwise a solid entry in The Murderbot Diaries.
I've only read this one once, and it's lower ranking is because it's coming up against some solid installments. This is also the entry that inspired a longer essay about Murderbot and storytelling that I will probably pick up again.
The O.G. The one that started it all. I will gladly purchase multiple copies of this book so I can hand them out willy nilly to the readers in my life. As an entry into the wider series, it's very hard to top this.
Murderbot has come into its own, and now it needs to rescue its first group of humans. I like to think of the first four books as the first season of a television serial, and Exit Strategy is the finale. After this one, the series is redefined in a new setting and a new set of goals.
A nice long novel to sit down and keep me engrossed in Murderbot adventures? I am here and I am repeatedly re-reading. I love Murderbot and ART together. I love how they each gain insight into the other by talking to their humans. I love how they're not exactly a romance, but they have a deep and meaningful relationship that people confuse to be romantic. I want to see more of that.
I love a beginning of a story. I love reading the ending and finding all the easter eggs that hint at events yet to come. This is perhaps the best book 2 installment of any series I have ever read. We are introduced to ART. We see Murderbot interact with people without the pre-determined social scripts its used to for the first time. It's a lovely book and I love it so.
Do you agree? Do you disagree? Which entry in The Murderbot Diaries is your favorite? How optimistic are you about the new Murderbot Diaries TV series?
